Intro

Hello Mom and Dad, I have learned many things in all my subjects. Some of the thing i learned will be showed in my portfolio. The 2 thing I'm good at is math and following directions the teachers give us. The 2 thing i need to improve on are my art skills and participating in class. My goals for the last 6 weeks of school are to participate in class and do well in my exams and tests.

Adult Response

In looking at your work I would like to compliment you on the following 2 things:
Good works on everything and nice presentations.
In the last 6 weeks of school I will help you reach your goals by:

Term 1 Reflection

Term 1 Math Reflection
Last term I have learned about rates, ratio, and proportion. This unit was kind of frustrating because it was at the beginning of the year and I and didn't want to work. Ratio was the easiest out of those three because it was just like fractions. For rates I learned about unit rate and unit prices. Proportion, it was easy when I got the hang of it. The next 3 we learned were Pythagoras, square roots, and perfect square. All 3 of those were quite easy because my dad helped me understand and gave some examples to work on, In Pythagoras I learned the formulas such as a2+b2=c2 and b2=c2-a2. Last term i didn't get to do all my homework because when we had to do the textbook work I tried to go to the online textbook but it didn't let me. For next term I'll try to ask more questions and answer the questions you ask. I’ll try to do more work and study harder for tests and quizzes.

Term 2 Reflection

In term 2, I think I did well on the test and quizzes throughout the term. In this term I learned about percents, surface area, and volume. In percent, I learned how to add taxes like, PST and GST to prices (numbers). In surface area I learned how to find the area of a shape like triangles, rectangles, and squares by using certain formulas such as lxw, and bxh/2. For volume I learned the formula for finding the volume which is lxwxh. In term 2 I struggled in percents because last year I missed the classes when they were going over percents. Next term I will try to participate in class, and do my blog work correctly. The difference between volume and surface area is the volume is volume is measuring how much capacity a shape has and surface area is the measurement of the exterior.

I have just finished reading chapter one of Iqbal. The author of the book is Francesco D’Adamo, there is no illustrator for this book because there are no illustrations. This book is written as a novel. This chapter is told by Fatima 10 year old child forced o wok n a carpet factory in Lahore, Pakistan.
The author’s purpose for writing this text is to inform people about child labour. I am reading this text to gain a deeper understanding of the ongoing issue about employing children.
The key lines worth remembering from the text are “I suspect man of us stopped dreaming.” I chose this because it shows that being in child labor can have a huge impact on your mental and physical health. The second line i chose from the text is “I studied those mysterious lines thick as trees in the forest” because the meaning of the line is the children were unable to read. The last line i chose is “ I never saw a clean slate neither mine nor my companions” because it proves you can never work of your debt. The key words i chose were dream, slate, and looms. I chose the word dream because it represents the children that have stopped dreaming and that they lost hope. The second word i chose was slate because it represents the debt they have to work off. Lastly i chose looms because that’s wast they work on and some are chained to them. The key names worth remembering are are Hussain Kahn, Fatima, Iqbal and Numskulls. I chose Hussain Kahn because he is the master of the children, I also chose Fatima because she is a 10year old girl that can’t read and is the narrator of the novel. I also chose the name Numskulls because those are the people who make mistakes while making the carpet and are not very smart. Iqbal is the main character. The key places I chose worth remembering are the carpet factory and Lahore, Pakistan. I chose the carpet factory because that is where the children are forced to work from dawn to dusk. I chose Lahore, Pakistan because it is where the story is located and it’s a country full of child labour.
The book was organized like a novel which made it easy to read and follow. The book had no illustrations and the chapters were organized by numbers instead of titles so it won’t give any clues about the chapter.
I can relate to this because I do work too, like my chores, I wash dishes and sometimes clean the house. I have many responsibilities such as doing school work.
My aaha moment was when Iqbal said “ The debt is never erased,” because the children always believed that they will pay off the debts. My question is Why have they stopped dreaming? My connection is similar to paying debt but instead my parents pay bills.

The Man Who Planted Trees

3) I can relate to “The Man Who Planted Trees” because I care about the environment like Elzeard, I care about the environment because it gives us a lot of resources and it keeps the wildlife alive.
5) I think there are many reasons why people and organizations approach the environment. One reason, is because some people plant trees just to help the environment, not for money or publicity they plant trees to help the future. Another reason is just to fool the people to vote for them in an election or something like that. I’ve seen people like this, they say they want to be green to the environment, but once they get what they want they never follow through with what they promised. On the other hand, there are the people who cut down trees for the money such as the paper making business. After they cut the trees they never plant new trees after to help the environment.
6) Jean - Jean treated the forest like a second home. He always came there after his wars and see how Elzéard and his forest were doing.
The charcoal burners - They did not care about the forest.
Elzéard Bouffier - Elzéard treated the forest with a lot of care. It was his home and his life. He would plant trees every day until he had a huge forest. Elzéard’s tree planting was enough to revive a nearby village
Government Official - The government official wanted the forest just for the fame and fortune .
Member of Parliament - The Member of Parliament used the forest as something to get votes. He declared that it belonged to the people of France. At the time of World War II, he suggested that the trees should be cut down for steam trains.
Timber merchants - They were greedy
Villagers - The villagers did not know who made the forest.
10) At a local level trees help the climate by absorbing all the water from rain, so the land wouldn't be dry. At a global level trees help the world by producing oxygen.

GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA
Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject:
TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?
To create a definition card to explain what a simile is, and draw a diagram of the simile.

INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
I am suppose to complete this assignment to understand it and know how to use it in real life.
CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
  • include a diagram (colored and outlined)
  • a specific definition to explain what a simile is

NEXT STEPS:

TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA
Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject: English Language Arts
Short Story - "Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes
TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?

I was required to compose a friendly letter using information from a short story.

INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
There are several reasons why I am doing this writing assignment. First I learned the elements of a short story and learned to identify them in our story. Next, we learned the components to write in a friendly letter format. Then, specific story details and wrote in the first person as if we were a character from the short story.
CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
  • Use proper Friendly Letter format referring to letter frame
  • compose the rough copy letter using specific details from the short story and write the letter from the perspective of one of the main characters in the story
  • remember to use appropriate tone and audience for the letter

· complete all the steps in the writing process as set out in the assignment directions

NEXT STEPS:

  • I can now write a piece of writing using the friendly letter format
  • I can now complete a piece of writing by going through all the steps of the writing process
  • I can now identify the elements of a short story and find them in a text
  • I can write from a point of view of a character
  • I can now support my thoughts using specific examples from a text

Two Minutes To Make A Difference

Our topic is Child Labor around the world. One of our big question was " Why were children the one working when they could make their parents work instead?'
Key points We learned for this project was 247 million children are forced to work.
We are done our first draft of our video and this is due on may 20.
